Replacing grips

Handlebar grips need replacing when they are worn, damaged or just damn uncomfortable. Follow these simple instruction and it should be easy enough.

Time taken: 30min

Difficulty Rating:

Tools Required

Flat bladed screwdriver, trimming knife, set allen keys(if bar ends fitted). Tin hairspray

Step one: Remove bar ends (if you have any) using allen keys. Prise off bar end plugs using the flat screwdriver. Try not to damage these out of frustration. Roll back the end of the grip and smear some soapy water on the handlebars. Now slide the grip toward the outside of the bar whilst twisting. This can be a bit of a pain in the ar@e. Alternatively, use a sharp knife and slice through the rubber taking care not to damage your bars (carbon especially).

Step two: Make sure bars are clean and free from any oil. Check that the new grips are the same length as the old. They do vary in size and may need cut down to accomodate bar ends. Use a sharp pair heavy duty scissors or a Stanley blade to cut if necessary. Spray the hairspray into the inside of the grip taking care not to choke yourself to death. Now twist the grip on to the bars. You may need to keep spraying as you slide the grip on as some hairspray is pretty quick drying. (I asked my granny honest!!!)

Choose your grips carefully. There are many grips on the market, some of which are absolutely crap. Try investing in a dual compound grip as they are a lot easier on the hands.
